“What do you think?” Nik said, emerging from the bedroom.

I wasn't sure where to look. The dress she had borrowed from Paige was, in a word, stunning. It was somehow silver and black at the same time, in some way my male mind couldn't fathom. Black lace peeked out from the low-cut top, where the pleasant shape of Nik's pert breasts was plumped up and displayed in silvery, lacy, shimmery glory. It was sleeveless, and ft her slender form tightly, all the way to the very short skirt, which flared ever-so slightly, and has an alarming slit in it that ran almost to the middle of her ass. The effect was elegant and slutty at the same time.

I let out a puff of air. Several thousand things popped up in my mind as possibilities to say (“get back in there and put some clothes on;” “you look like a prostitute;” and “fuck”) but my mouth and brain negotiated only a caveman-like monosyllable:

“Hot.”

“It's almost too much,” she said. But then she shrugged. “You ready?”

Her eyes seemed to be genuinely asking this question.

“I feel under-dressed,” I said. And I did. Again, I was sporting my best outfit: jeans and a white shirt.

“Oh god, whatever,” Nik said. “It's only Sydney.”

She smiled at me.

And so away we went. I followed her out the door. As she stepped out of her shoes to head across the sand to Paige and Mitch's cottage, I noticed it.

The anklet.

The sight of it spiked through me and wrenched my gut in two directions at once.

I could have said something, of course, but it wound me up so much that I just followed her. Truthfully? I wanted to see where it would go.
